7 Science has officially begun PLTW - Project Lead the Way. Our first challenge - building a foot orthosis for a child with cerebral palsy. THrough team work and leadership, as well as following a design process, the students are creating an orthotic to help a young child develop a stronger gait and keep their muscles elongated.
8 Science is on their final build for PLTW. We are working on creating toys for therapy for children with cerebral palsy. There are a variety of ways that their designs can be used - from strengthening and fine motor skills, to reaching and stretching muscles groups. They have done an excellent job so far and I am very proud of the work that they have accomplished.
7 Social Studies has been studying the faith of Islam, its origins and the Five Pillars of the Islamic faith. We will next be studying the architectural and cultural achievements that are part of modern society, and the influence that the religion and its followers have had on medicine and mathematics.
8 Social Studies has been focusing on the North prior to the Civil War, its culture and economy, and the impact that industry had - and still has - on its society. We are currently looking into the Rhode Island and Lowell Systems that were part of the Mill Industry during this time. With the multitude of health risks and concerns over wages and hours, we will also be discussing the birth of the trade union and Sarah Bagley's involvement.
A friendly reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday the 14th of April. I wish everyone a happy and relaxing Spring Break, and look forward to the start of Track and Field season upon our return!
Let's have a wonderful fourth quarter!
