Even more amazing news - in ONE week exactly we have some fantastic people coming to liven up our morning!
The Science Alliance will be visiting Washington Caldwell on February 22 at 9:30 am. The group will be putting on an interactive demonstration focusing on Physics. "Lights, Camera, Action" is a k-8 program that will call on many student volunteers to spread the love of science to the entire school! You are more than welcome to attend!
Sixth Grade has just begun looking at Space Science - we will begin by looking at the parts of the universe, how distance and size are measured in space, and also take some time to identify what makes up out universe, galaxy and solar system. They will be leaving their iPads at school on Thursday night (tonight) to be updated and may have less homework as a result.
In 7th grade, we are going to be testing our knowledge on physical and chemical properties with a small quiz next week. One of the biggest areas of confusion comes when looking at the concept of "change"
with a substance - they should try to remember that if a substance changes, it is becoming something NEW, something that was not there originally. Shape, size, color, mass - those may change BUT my substance can still be the same. Have them review Lessons 2 &3 in Unit 1 for some extra time with the material.
Romans, Aqueducts, the Coliseum and Gladiators - we are looking at the foundations of Rome, how the Republic grew, and how the rights and concerns of all citizens were incorporated into the early empire that would one day stretch from England through Asia and Northern Africa.
8th Grade Science - Getting worn down? Building yourself up? The class is studying the weathering and erosional land-forms in the world around us, as well as depositional ones that are created by wind, water,
and nature... they are going to be designing their own islands that will feature 4 of each - the island maps will be due on Monday and the 8th graders will be able to start them tomorrow in class. Their work should be detailed and logical - no sea caves in the middle of a plateau, for example.
And in Social Studies, 8th graders have looked into society in the North and in the South - now we will start to look at how the mindsets of many living in those two regions differed, and through political and social issues began to separate the nation they once shared.
I wish you all a happy and healthy Presidents Day!!!
GO, Abe, Go!!!
