7 Science is going to start looking at genetics and traits. We will be learning about the use of punnett squares with some SpongeBob genetics and maybe creating some monsters along the way, too. At the end of the unit we will also have a DNA / RNA scavenger hunt where we will transcribe information to hunt through the classroom for clues.
8 Science is learning about volcanoes and earthquakes right now - we watched scientists trace killer eruptions through ice cores and layers of pumice, and are going to take a look at Mount St. Helens as well. From there we are going to plot the Ring of Fire to look at how tectonic plates and geologic activity are linked and then we will try to create some earthquake resistant structures after looking at what triggers an earthquake, wave types with earthquakes, and also how technology has advanced to adapt building structures in areas riddled with earthquake activity.
7 Social Studies has wrapped up ancient India is diving into Ancient China and Japan. we will be learning about the dynasties, achievements, and geography of these two cultural regions as well as the historical influences they have had on technology and belief systems around the world.
8 Social Studies is beginning to learn about the first presidency and will then gain a bit more insight into what American Government looks like in terms of the three branches of government, the Bill of Rights and amendments, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. We will discuss changes that have taken place over time to reflect a changing society's needs, and also the struggles that the founding members of the US government overcame to create a political system still in use today.
