7 Science has been rolling through Mitosis!!! From our toes to our stomachs, we have been learning about how body cells reproduce. The cell cycle is similar for meiosis (next weeks topic) but creates additional cells. At the end of Lesson 3 we will have a short quiz looking at the main concepts of mitosis and meiosis, but this will not be until after the next week or so. I will - as always - provide the kids with a study guide to help them keep their ideas organized and to help them review.
8 Science has been taking time to learn about one of the largest eruptions of the past century - Mount St. Helens in Washington State. We are also looking into earthquakes - both impacted by tectonic plate activity! We are wrapping up the final concepts on Geology next week and then we will switch over to learn about Ecology and the Environment. After this, it will PLTW (fourth quarter).
7 Social Studies has been working its way through the early dynasties of Ancient China - we have looked into the Shang Dynasty and the Zhou, and are also learning about the philosophy of Confucius and the impact of Daoism on the societies of BC China. Next week we will continue on our quest for knowledge and begin to look more closely at the inventions created by this culture that changed the world.
8 Social Studies is beginning to learn about our government's structure - the three branches, the sharing of power in terms of checks and balances, the importance of the right to vote, and the Bill of Rights. We will also be taking the citizenship test and looking at changes in government over time.
